When it comes to achieving your goals, sharing them with others can be a game-changer. Here's why:

1️⃣ Accountability Boost:

By sharing your goals with trusted friends, family, or mentors, you create a sense of accountability. They can offer support, encouragement, and gentle reminders to keep you focused and motivated along your journey.

Writing my first book, I was in two accountability groups. One was an intensive coaching group and the second a smaller more intimate group. Now, I’m honored to lead a group that is the perfect combination of the two. As writers, we need each other to speak louder than the voices in our heads. If you need an accountability group, join my Publish & Tell Coaching Community today. I promise you’ll accomplish more over the next six months with me, than without me—no matter your stage in the writing process.

2️⃣ Collective Energy:

When you share your goals, you tap into the power of collective energy. The positive vibes and support from others can uplift your spirits, provide fresh perspectives, and fuel your determination to reach new heights.

Momentum is powerful and sometimes, as writers, we need a good shove in the right direction. When we surround ourselves with others moving in the same direction we want to go, we can’t help but stay focused and on track. Sharing ideas, seeing what is working for others, or hearing the questions you didn’t even know you had, can bring much-needed energy and clarity.

3️⃣ Unexpected Opportunities:

Sharing your goals opens doors to unexpected opportunities. You never know who might be listening or who might have connections, resources, or insights that can help propel you toward your goals faster than you ever imagined.

Why reinvent the wheel, by hanging out with other author friends, you will learn about new marketing strategies, podcasts to be interviewed on, magazines to be listed in, and so much more. You may find your next writing partner or illustrator. You never know what opportunities will come your way if you open the door to possibilities.

4️⃣ Celebrate Milestones: When you share your goals, you give others a chance to celebrate your milestones and victories with you. Their cheers and applause can boost your confidence, remind you of your progress, and keep you motivated during challenging times.

Isn’t it great when you’re in the company of those who “get you”? I mean understand what it means to hit a target word count, grow a launch team, or finalize your cover design. As authors, we speak our own language and it can be challenging and lonely to celebrate your writing goals if no one really gets them. I get them, and I celebrate them!

Remember, sharing your goals doesn't make them any less valid or achievable. On the contrary, it amplifies your commitment, builds a support network, and creates a powerful ripple effect that propels you toward success. It’s time to commit to your goals. Join my Publish & Tell Coaching Community today and watch your progress unfold.

Don't hesitate! Share your goals, embrace the collective energy, and let the world witness your journey of growth, achievement, and transformation. Together, we can accomplish amazing things!

There are several factors to consider when deciding how many books to have on hand. For one, you will need to consider your audience size and how many copies of your book you expect to sell. If you have a large audience or have multiple events on your calendar, you may want to have more books on hand than if you have a smaller audience with no events in sight.

Another factor to consider is the cost of printing and storing physical copies of your book. Printing and storing books can be expensive, so you will need to weigh the cost of having books on hand against the potential benefits of having them available for readers. Do you have room for a pallet of books or just a few boxes? Books are heavy and need to be stored in a climate-controlled environment.

The good news is the decision of how many books to have on hand is a personal decision you make and you can start small and go bigger as needed.

For example, if you are a new author with just one book under your belt, you may want to start with a small number of books on hand, such as 50 or 100 copies. This will allow you to gauge demand for your book and avoid being stuck with a large number of unsold copies.

On the other hand, if you are an established author with a large audience and a schedule full of speaking events, a book tour, or consignment opportunities, you may want to have a larger number of books on hand, such as 500 or 1000 copies. This will allow you to take advantage of economies of scale and reduce the cost of printing books.

Even when planning to distribute books directly from your website, take into consideration the traffic your site receives. Are you currently selling anything else from your site? Do you have a marketing plan in place to sell from your site?

The decision is yours and yours alone to make. As an author coach, I don’t want my authors with boxes of books they don’t have a plan to sell so we either need to strategize a marketing plan to sell them directly or to sell them digitally. Either way, you need a book marketing plan.

Book tours can be an incredible opportunity to promote your book and connect with readers. But with ever-changing digital landscapes and a rising need for authentic in-person events, the key is to make your book tour both unforgettable and successful. Today, we’ll explore strategies for both a digital and in-person book tour.

1. Defining Your Target Audience: Who is your book for and how can you best reach them?

If you want to sell books along your tour, you need the right readers to attend the events. To maximize your success make sure that each stop on your tour reaches your ideal audience.

2. Maximizing Digital Book Tours: Utilize the digital platform your readers are on. Being a guest on a podcast can be exciting and valuable practice for talking about your book, but speaking on ten in a row to the wrong audience won’t equate to book sales. If your audience is on Facebook, be sure the podcast host shares the content there as well, or that you can. Verify the podcast has a decent following as well. It’s generous to help out new podcast hosts but if they are all new, you’ll be speaking to crickets. Use a variety of digital platforms to make the most of your efforts and expand your reach.

3. Taking Book Tours In-Person: Think creatively about the stops you can make. Will you be hosting an in-person launch party? If so, make it stop number one! Then move to bookstores, libraries, coffee shops, small boutiques, community centers, networking groups … as you can see the possibilities are many.

4. Creating Lasting Connections with Readers: Decide how you will capture your reader’s email—either using a guest book in-person or an opt-in digitally. Having these emails will allow you to continue the journey with each of your readers.

By understanding your target audience, utilizing digital platforms to reach them, and creating engaging in-person events, you have the ability to make a memorable and successful book tour. Use these strategies to form lasting connections with readers long after your book tour has ended.

It is always beneficial to release your book to an existing audience. When it comes to book launches, you can decide to celebrate your book’s release or to release it without much fanfare. The best method for you and your book depends on your long-term strategy and personality. Your launch can be online or in-person. You could have what’s referred to as a soft launch or go big with a book tour. Here are some items to consider:

Will you have books on hand to sell directly to readers?

Are you willing to travel?

What is the end goal for your book?

Do you have a team to support you?

Let’s talk today specifically about four kinds of book releases:

Digital

In-person

Tour

Soft Launch

Digital

Host a live virtual launch party on platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or Facebook Live. Invite your readers to participate in the celebration—you can read excerpts from your book, answer questions, and interact with your audience in real-time. You can choose to have a host interview you or go at it alone. Either way is fine. Plan some talking points and strategize how to include your readers in the celebration (keep reading—I have suggestions).

The other option for a digital party is to livestream from your in-person event. I only recommend this if you have a structured event or if you have an author talk planned at your event. Livestreaming people coming and going from your party isn’t what your online audience wants to see. Ensure you keep that portion of your audience in mind and included if you livestream from your in-person party. Consider camera angles and volume. Having a dedicated team member (paid or volunteer) to assist with this is wise.

In-person

Planning an in-person celebration has as many variables as publishing your book. You can choose to host a small intimate affair at your home, a coffee shop, or a friend’s house, or go larger at a library, bookstore, or conference center. Of course, bookstores and libraries can go either way depending on their space accommodations.

Tying your book launch into the theme of your book is always fun as well. I launched my first book, Save the Butter Tubs!: Discover Your Worth in a Disposable World at a vintage building that was a grocery store in the 1930s. It was the first place my grandmother ever worked outside of her family farm and was nostalgic. With that book, I started the celebration with a prerelease party the week prior to the book’s release and continued on an eight-week book tour across multiple states. My book celebration for A Moved Soul was hosted by the photographer who snapped the cover photo for the book. She offered months prior while at the photoshoot, and I took her up on it. It was a fantastic way to introduce me to her audience and the public as it was a public event. It also boosted the exposure of her studio since my existing audience was invited. Be creative. The celebration should be that … a celebration! Make it fun and memorable and don’t stress about sales. They will come if you market your releases strategically.

Book Tour

As I mentioned, with my first book, I relished the experience with an eight-week book tour over eighteen stops along the way stretching across multiple states. I had stops at churches, libraries, radio stations, book clubs, bookstores, an international conference, Chamber of Commerce events, and more. Here are my two keys to consider when planning your tour.

Will you have the opportunity to present an author talk? If not, it may not be worth the stop.

Do you have the capacity—to travel, keep up with the schedule, order books where needed for consignment or direct sales, set up, tear down, and talk for hours? Book tours are fun but they are work. Even with a team!

There are digital tours as well but don’t be fooled, those are work too. I did this with my Team Solution Series with great success. My co-author and I released four books in six months. The tour spanned that entire time. Between media, magazine articles, blogs, livestreams, and podcast interviews, we didn’t let the fact that we live in two separate states keep us from celebrating our four books. We even launched the first in the series on my birthday and the last in the series on hers. This launch strategy set us up well for what has become a strong income stream in our businesses.

Soft Launch

Often a book will have a soft launch before having a celebration or launch party. A soft launch means that your book goes live through your distribution channels without much fanfare. You may or may not even post about it on your socials. Think about it like a restaurant soft opening. They are testing the waters, working out any kinks, and planning for bigger marketing strategies. The same is true with a soft book launch. You may not have the desire for a celebration and want to use the resources it would take to have a party, to run ads instead. Or if you’re planning on celebrating at a large event such as a conference where you are the keynote speaker, you might have a soft launch ahead of time with the understanding that the attention your book deserves is coming with the larger event. There are many reasons for having a soft launch and sometimes authors have had a soft launch because they didn’t know how to host a launch party or have the resources at the time.

The good news is that you can have a book party anytime, anywhere. It doesn’t matter if your book has been out for a week or a year, plan the party and celebrate!

Keep in mind that book celebrations should be reader-focused. Yes, you are celebrating your book, but if you’re having a celebration it should be for your readers too. Be creative and think of fun ways to include them in your celebration whether you decide to have it in-person or online. Can’t decide which way to have it? You could do both if that suits you and your audience. Want to continue the celebration? Book a tour with multiple stops. And guess what, you can do that online too! A digital book tour can be done as a guest blogger or a guest on podcasts or livestreams across social media.

Ways to include your audience in your book launch:

Offering your fans or soon-to-be loyal readers an exclusive sneak peek of your book before the official release is a nice way to include them in the celebration. This could be in the form of early access to the first chapter or selected pages, creating a sense of anticipation and appreciation.

If you provide advanced copies you can encourage your readers to leave reviews for your book on platforms like Amazon, Goodreads, or your website. To motivate them, you can run a giveaway or a contest where participants have a chance to win signed copies or other book-related prizes. Just be mindful of the rules different platforms and distributors have for asking for reviews.

Other contests you can run to draw attention to your book and engage your audience, could include a swag box giveaway, or If your book has characters or themes that can inspire fan art, hold a fan art contest. Ask your readers to create artwork based on your book, and showcase the submissions during your release celebration. Offer prizes for the best entries. If you don’t want to give away a swag box just for the sake of a giveaway, it could be a prize for your art contest. Swag boxes can include gadgets, t-shirts, pens, bookmarks, you name it. Theme them around your book. You may think it’s silly but your fans love this kind of prize.

Organize a Q&A session where readers can submit questions to you or your book's characters if you write fiction. Respond to these questions in character, whether through videos or written responses, to add an element of fun and immersion. If your book is nonfiction, be creative in how you respond. Make it as personal to the reader as possible.

Partnering with book clubs or starting a virtual book club dedicated to your book is a great way to introduce your book. Engage with members, participate in discussions, and perhaps even host a Q&A session online or in person with the book club members.

Not as popular in the nonfiction genre, but still a fun gesture are bookplates. I offered this to anyone who preordered my book and emailed me their receipt. I mailed them a signed bookplate for their book. Offering personalized bookplates with the reader's name for signed copies of your book is a special touch readers can’t get without you. You could use this as a lead magnet, but keep in mind that these aren’t digital and require postage and supplies. Readers can request these bookplates, and you can send them out as a special token of appreciation.

Sharing behind-the-scenes insights into your writing process, inspirations, and the journey to publishing your book is always entertaining for your readers. This could be in the form of blog posts, videos, or social media updates. Talk to them as if you’re talking to one person right in your living room.

If appropriate for your genre, engage your readers in a collaborative storytelling activity. You can start a story, and each reader can contribute a sentence or a paragraph, creating a unique and interactive narrative.

Lastly, create a heartfelt thank-you video for your readers and share it across your social media channels and website. Express your gratitude for their support and let them know how they've contributed to the success of your book.

Remember to always be genuine and enthusiastic in your interactions with your readers. Their support is invaluable, and including them in your book release celebration is a meaningful way to acknowledge their importance in your author journey.

I’d love to be invited to your upcoming book releases. Tag me in your events @publishandtell across social media.

4 Tech Pieces Every Author Needs

As authors, we have to connect with our readers. Unless you are traditionally published to an existing audience, you need to utilize a few tech pieces to engage your readers. We understand as a writer, tech isn’t likely what you signed on for. Tech holds a great deal of writers from their full potential, but it doesn’t have to. Here are the four areas I recommend new authors should focus on.

1. Socials

It’s not enough to be on every social media platform. You need to be on the right ones—the one or two where your readers are most active. If you write business books, LinkedIn is the platform for you. If you are writing science fiction, TikTok may be your best bet. The key is knowing your audience and where they are active. I’ve said it before and will say it again, you don’t need to be active on all social media platforms, but you should have a profile that directs readers to the platform you are most active on. Creating a profile on the most prominent social media channels can help readers tag you and promote you—with very little work from you. Keep those profiles up to date (I recommend refreshing quarterly) and focus daily on the platforms that matter for your business.

The next question I hear is, “What do I post for my author business?” I suggest you start by taking note of the kind of social posts that interest you. Do you like funny posts? Educational posts? What prompts you to like, comment, or share? What prompts you to click on a link? Spend thirty minutes scrolling through your ideal platform and literally take notes. Was it the images? The words? The anticipation or fear of missing out? Did you share because the post "spoke your language?”

2. CRM/Email Automation

You probably expected a website to be next on the list. While it is on the list, it is not top of the list for an author just starting. More important, is to build your email list! But you do need a landing page to do this. You can actually do this without building a website if you use the right email automation and client relationship management (CRM) software. Most of these softwares have the functionality that you need as an author.

Building your email list via a professional landing page (created with your CRM or on your website) is imperative to connecting with your readers and building an author business.

Having an email list provides you with a personal connection point with your readers. It’s not the same as posting on social media and hoping the algorithm shows your post in their feeds. It is a direct link to your reader. With that, use it wisely and don’t abuse the privilege.

At Publish & Tell, I use MailChimp for my email automation and Subbly for my CRM. It, along with other options on the market, allows you to segment your audience based on purchases, opt-ins, email clicks, and more. This matters! No reader wants to keep getting the same emails from you trying to sell them a book they already purchased.

3. Website

Depending on what you intend to do with your book, and if your desire is to build an author business or not, I highly recommend a professional website. Professional doesn’t have to mean expensive. If you are tech-savvy, you can easily set up a website in a matter of minutes with Squarespace. Both Publishandtell.com and BrendaHaire.com are built on Squarespace.

I’ve tried other software in the past and even built my first website from scratch back in 2003. I’ve learned over the years that I want simple easy-to-use tools that I can manage on my own if I choose to. With that, you don’t have to build or manage your site, but I cannot emphasize enough that you keep control and access. Don’t allow someone else to “lock” you out of what you’ve paid to have built. I’ve seen this time and time again. It’s not a fun place to be as a business owner—an outdated website because you can’t easily access it to make the changes and the “builder” wants ridiculous fees to make one simple change. Instead, opt for user-friendly software; even if you outsource the initial site setup, you should always have access. If you need to hire out, I offer this service for authors. Included in the fee is a tutorial on how to access your pages on the backend so you can make updates yourself down the road.

4. Payment Processing Software

This one can sneak up on unprepared authors. You’re all set for your big launch party and suddenly realize you have no way to collect payments for the books you’re going to sell that evening. Be prepared! Choose a payment processing software early. Order your card reader well in advance of when you need it. Set up your account with all the products you will sell during your in-person event. Be sure to include any book bundles, or promotional items, and don’t neglect to include any applicable taxes. Then conduct a practice sale. I recommend setting up a product for $.25 and running the sale all the way through. This way you’ll experience what your reader will experience during and after purchase. Be sure to demonstrate to your team or assistant how to use the software. This will allow them to be prepared to support you at your live event.

As an author, your main goal is to get your book into the hands of the right readers. To do this, these four tech pieces, while they may seem overwhelming, are the lifeblood of your author business. If you have more in-depth questions or need additional support, join the Publish & Tell Coaching Community where I coach through these tools and help authors build their dream businesses.

The Google Workspace is Your Best Friend

I remember my friend Donna trying to convince me to use Google Docs when I was writing my first book. I wasn’t familiar with the G Suite, as it was called back then, and was a bit intimidated by it all. I was also concerned about security issues. Silly me! I was missing out! Now, I live in Google Workspace. I use everything from Docs, Sheets, Keep, Calendar, you name it...Google is serving me well these days.

Work in real-time together

So why Google Docs for publishing? Why Google Workspace? Recently, I coauthored two books, and I’m currently working on several more. Google Docs allows you to invite people into your Docs, give them certain access, and even work in the Doc together at the same time. Working with coauthors hundreds of miles away, this is the easiest way to make sure we are both working on the most recent version of the manuscript. Think about it...before you had to download the document; which meant that only one person could be working on it at a time. Then, you had to re-upload it, make sure you named it properly to indicate the updates and resend it to your coauthor. And let’s not talk about trying to remember what the last name change was…oh dear! Whoever created Google Docs...I love you!

Calendaring is a whole other story. I’m almost embarrassed to say that when I met Amanda, I was still using a paper calendar. I loved writing everything and seeing it all a year at a time, or even two years. The problem was, only I could see it.

Share it

With Google Calendar, you can share your writing goals, deadlines, and milestones all while layering your writing calendar over your business calendar. This way you can turn on and off the layers and keep your business calendar private. By sharing your writing calendar with your coauthor, you can update in real-time with notifications to one another. I recently set up a new calendar for a book tour schedule for Worthy: Know Your Worth and Act Accordingly to Experience Freedom, Enjoy Fulfillment, and Live Fearlessly. My coauthor lives an hour and a half from me so keeping our calendar of events straight is essential.

Automation

You can also link your calendar to your Zoom account and easily add the location as a Zoom that then populates in your Zoom account too. Easy peasy!

Share your sticky notes

Google Keep is another game changer. Again, Amanda is two steps ahead of me...she introduced me to this tool and I said goodbye to sticky notes. I know...as an author...I can’t believe I said that. Don’t get me wrong, I still use them to make notes on manuscripts that are printed or in books but no longer for just office notes. Nope! Google Keep allows you to color code your lists so you can have one for work, home, play, per book, et cetera, and the best part is you can share your “sticky notes” with others. I say the best part, but I might like the check box feature just as much.

One way I use this while writing is to pull quotes. As I come across something in my book I want to use in marketing, I copy it to Keep on my list for that particular book. Then as I use the quotes, I check them off.

Traveling…no problem

The best part about any of the Google Workspace tools is that you can access them in real-time from any device. Yep, I worked on a manuscript from my phone in waiting rooms, airports, and more. I can access the same information from my phone, iPad, or laptop. I can even access it on my husband’s devices if I need to by logging in with my email address.

So stop the endless downloads and uploads, and get in on the collaborative process of Google Workspace today. The good news is many of the tools you can utilize for free. Join my Publish & Tell Coaching Community and utilize these tools in real-time with me while positioning your brand or publishing your book.

Should I Have Books on Hand as an Author?

As an author, one of the most common questions you may ask yourself is whether or not you should have books on hand. Whether you are an established author with a long list of published works or a new author with just one book under your belt, having books on hand can be an important part of your marketing strategy.

There are several reasons why authors might choose to have books on hand. For one, if you plan to speak or host events where you could sell your books in person, having books on hand is the best way to deliver them to your readers. You can use them as giveaways at book signings or other events, or you can sell them directly in person and from your website. Having books on hand can create a sense of urgency for readers who are on the fence about purchasing your book. If they know that you have a limited number of books available, they may be more likely to buy a copy before they run out. Readers love signed copies and having them on hand allows you to personalize each one.

Another reason why authors might choose to have books on hand is for personal reasons. Having physical copies of your work can be a great way to feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in your work. When you have books on hand, you can easily share your work with friends and family who may not be able to access it digitally.

Of course, there are also some downsides to having books on hand. For one, it can be expensive to print and store physical copies of your work. Additionally, if you have a large number of books on hand, you may need to find a way to store them in a location that is safe, physically book-friendly (no musty basements), and accessible. Finally, having books on hand can also be time-consuming, as you will need to keep track of inventory and fulfill orders as they come in.

Ultimately, whether or not you should have books on hand as an author is a personal decision that will depend on your circumstances and goals. If you want to promote your work and create a sense of urgency for readers, having books on hand can be a viable strategy. However, if you are concerned about the cost and logistics of printing and storing physical copies of your work, you may want to focus on digital distribution instead. Allowing distributors like Kindle Direct Publishing to handle your printing and distribution is much simpler. Plus, you are in the world’s largest online bookstore!

After you decide you want books on hand, the next question is always, how many? Stay tuned for the next blog post as we continue this conversation. In the meantime, let us know in the comments if you have books on hand.

Based on 1 Corinthians 13: 3-7, I kicked off the Writer’s Retreat Box with love by giving away two boxes!

Paul tells us in the New Living Translation, “If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”

My prayer is that the winners of the two boxes, Ruby and her daughter Kourtni, enjoyed every item in the box and beyond. Yes, beyond! There was a QR code that led to wallpaper!

February’s box contained over twenty-nine items! Here’s a quick run down and why I chose each item. If you missed the Facebook video of the reveal, you can catch the replay here.

The Devotional

Each box contains a devotional written by me. This month, God wants you to know that love never fails. If He has called you to write, He will not fail you. Press on! In this first box, I printed the devotional as a small booklet but moving forward, I’ll print them in full 8.5” X 11” so you can three-hole punch them and create a binder. Who knows, one of the boxes might even include a fancy new binder?

The Postcard

I added a special postcard with the verse of the month and a few exercises on it to keep in a special place and read often to remind you that love never fails. He brought you to this and won’t leave you now!

Wallpaper

I created a matching wallpaper to download and set your reminder on your phone. As often as we look at our phones, we will be reminded that we are loved and love will not fail. The outcome may not look like your plan, but He will never let you down.

Writing Prompts

I included a handful of writing prompts based on this month’s theme to be used during your retreat time or once per week to start your creative juices.

Creative Juice

Speaking of creative juice. Tea is one of my favorite “creative juices”. This box held six flavors to enjoy as you sit to write each week or try them all on your “retreat day” if you choose to set time aside. I’ve also included a special heart-shaped spoon to remind you that love never fails!

Writing Fuel

Believe it or not, chocolate is not my favorite writing fuel. I’m a salty girl and prefer salty protein snacks, but who could pass up this adorable chocolate Scrabble game? Enjoy!

Writing Tools

Every writer loves fun notebooks and the cute library card-inspired notebook delighted my heart. I hope it delights you! Use it for book ideas, title brainstorming, or secrets. I won’t tell. I’ve also included four sets of sticky notes. I use stickies on my calendar, in books I’m reading, and throughout my journals. Enjoy these cute variations. And tucked in a cork pencil pouch you’ll find a heart-shaped pen to remind you that love never fails! It’s cute even if you just keep it in your pen holder on your desk. I hope that every time you write with it you’ll be reminded of the power of love that lives in you.

Stationery

I grew up in a Hallmark store. Not a Hallmark movie, but the store. My mom managed a store until she retired. I love all things stationary and still love receiving snail mail. I included some beautiful notecards and wax seals to make them extra special. Just for fun, I tossed in two self-inking rubber stamps for your journaling, decorating the cards you send, or marking your calendar for writing days!

Conversation Starters

I’m including the heart and book-themed bookmarks in this section because as you share these with others, I hope you’ll use them to start the conversation about your book. Starting a conversation is as easy as accepting a compliment on your new heart necklace and letting others know you received it in your Writer’s Retreat Box you receive each month to keep you focused on your book. The shelf-sitter book decor can also start a conversation. Place it somewhere in your home or office to remind you that love never fails and to write! As I mentioned in the live reveal sneak peek, I sold six books last weekend because I had on a necklace that started a conversation about my books. Even if you’re book isn’t finished, using the conversation starters will be fuel to keep writing!

As you can see, the February Writer’s Retreat Box includes a bit of everything to keep you focused and hopeful. That’s how I want you to feel each month when you open your box. If God called you to share your story, let’s get it out there. Let me know in the comments what book you’re working on. Be sure you’re on the waitlist for March’s box. The cart opens to the waitlist first on Sunday!

Hi, I’m Brenda.

I published my first book in 2018. Now, I’m a ten-time published author and counting and the CEO of two businesses that support writers on their journeys! Here's how it all started:

In 2003, I felt called to write. In 2006, I took two manuscripts to traditional publishers. They told me they loved my work and titles but that I was a “nobody” and to come back when I was a “somebody”. Ouch! In 2016, inspired by my grandmother to follow through with my projects, I found a writing coach. In 2018, I published my first book, Save the Butter Tubs! Discover Your Worth in a Disposable World.

After releasing that book, the company that helped me, hired me as a coach. I went on to become the president of that company in 2020. At the end of 2021, the CEO wanted to take the company in a new direction, and I wanted to continue serving authors. That’s when I co-founded Joy of Pursuit to help authors find joy in their pursuit to write, publish, market, and build author businesses. I created the Author Business Network—a monthly coaching membership—and love helping authors through the process.

In August 2023, I hosted a beach writing retreat. This intimate affair solidified the idea that had been brewing in my mind since 2017 when struggled through writing my first book. A writing retreat-in-a-box! When I curated the goodie bags for that retreat and wrote the devotional, I knew there was something bigger going on. God orchestrated all the details and continues to awe me through the process.

I decided to give myself a four-month lead time until the first box would launch. There were so many details to work out from writing and printing the devotionals to curating the contents and packaging for each box. I desire to provide items that spur you in your call to write and remind you of Whose you are and who you are! I know the struggle that comes with sharing our stories. I want each box to be a great big hug to you as you press on toward your goal of sharing what God has placed on your heart. As women, we are busy wearing so many hats we tend to slide the hard tasks to the back burner. Writing can be difficult, especially when we are being vulnerable and sharing our stories with the world. This box is designed to help you “own” the writer's role and encourage you each step of the way. It’s to remind you monthly to take the time with God to work on what He has called and gifted you to do.

In my last blog, I mentioned God’s new timeline. I had planned to release the first box in May. Then, He handed me the idea and devotion for April. I must have been too comfortable with the idea because then He bumped it up to March!

I’m holding on tight as God walks me through this. As I unpacked the idea, studied the “how-to”, and prayed, I found myself weeping when God gave me this vision:

Imagine if all my faith-filled daughters started to write and share their testimonies. Oh, how faith would expand and the world would change. Raise, dry bones!

I have a lump in my throat just thinking about moving the Writer’s Retreat Box up by a month. I mean, you could consider February’s box the first, but preparing two giveaway boxes isn’t the same as preparing twenty-five actual boxes. Well, it is and it isn’t. God is speaking to me as I write and reminding me that the majority of the work it takes to curate a box for you is the same for one box or multiple boxes. I love this thought because I want these boxes to feel personal. It reminds me of feedback I received from a participant at my beach retreat last year. She said, “I think the items in your box will make the attendees feel worthy and special. I know the retreat bags you put together for us made me feel loved. Each item seemed to have been prayerfully chosen just for me! I love that we got items for our writing and for our soul.”

This is exactly my goal with the Writer’s Retreat Box—to fuel your writing and nourish your soul!

The box curation process is part of what led me to subscription boxes to begin with. I’m a natural integrative thinker and prophet so these two gifts work hand and hand to curate these boxes. I hope I didn’t just freak you out with the word prophet. Don’t worry, I won’t be telling you how the world will end. God revealed my gift of prophecy years ago and I share it in my book, A Moved Soul which was released in June of 2023. As God has revealed to me, my role as a prophet is to help others see things easily overlooked.

Each box will contain items to remind you of His Word and how it applies to your writing. Just typing this makes me tear up. That’s a huge responsibility, God! I’m honored you’ve chosen me and pray you will use me to bring testimonies from the souls of women across the United States. Imagine if women of faith in your community began sharing their testimonies on a regular basis. Would it expand your faith? Would we wait in expectation of what God was going to do instead of doubting and feeling the sense of lack the world wants us to feel?

It’s hard to type when you’re speechless. This is so much bigger than me or a subscription box. God is on the move and He has chosen these boxes as a way to encourage you to share His goodness with others through your obedience to write.
